Aoun: Lebanon is keen to maintain Arab countries safety
President Michel Aoun considered on Monday that smuggling of all kinds, from drugs, to fuel, and other matters affects Lebanon, adding that what happened recently with Saudi Arabia “proves it.”

In the meeting held on Monday at the Baabda Palace to discuss the Saudi decision to ban Lebanese fruits and vegetables, he stressed that Lebanon is keen to maintain any country’s safety, especially Arab countries and their people.

Aoun also called security apparatuses to be firm while combating smuggling operations and those behind them.

For his part, Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab said during the meeting that Lebanon “is keen to maintain the best relations with Saudi Arabia,” voicing support to the Saudi kingdom in combatting smuggling operations and networks and prosecuting those involved in them.

“We are certain that Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries know very well that stopping the import of Lebanese products does not prevent drugs smuggling operations which can use other ways,” he said.

He concluded by noting that cooperation between the two countries helps seizing smuggling networks.

Last Friday, Saudi Arabia said that it will impose a ban on imports of fruits and vegetables from Lebanon, citing an increase in drug smuggling operations.

Such a measure will add to Lebanon's economic struggles as the fruit and vegetables trade is worth $24 million annually.
