REPORT: Hopes for civil marriage in Lebanon come to an end…but not yet

With President Sleiman's tweets last week expressing his support to civil marriage, the Lebanese people rejoiced for the possibility of adopting such a law.

Soon after that, their hope diminished with Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi stating that the marriage of Kholoud Sukkariyah and Nidal Darwish is illegal.

For his part, Premier Najib Mikati supported the Ministers and said that civil marriage will not be discussed so long as he is a Prime Minister.

In this context, Legal counselor Talal al-Husseini told LBCI that the aforementioned marriage contract is legal and the Interior Ministry has to document this contract in order to preserve the couple’s right.

Husseini added that if the ministry rejects documenting this marriage, it must explain its decision and justify it since a legal dispute will erupt with the ministry.
