REPORT: Lebanese lash back at Mufti’s anti-civil marriage fatwa via social media platforms

It wasn’t long after the Grand Mufti of the Republic Sheikh Rachid Qabbani made his anti-civil marriage statements that criticism on social media platforms followed.

Activists and pro civil-marriage enthusiasts retaliated using the internet as their weapon. Many uploaded their photos taken during civil marriage ceremonies, appealing severe punishment as per the Sheikh’s fatwa, which deems all those with a civil marriage contract as apostates.

These photos trended under the hash tag “#CivilMarriage” in Lebanon, usually accompanied with statements condemning the fatwa.
