Lebanese diplomatic team prepares for Washington talks with Israeli delegation: The details

Report by Lara El Hachem, English adaptation by Mariella Succar

In diplomacy, some weapons cannot be disclosed.

According to this principle, and with precision, discretion, and fast-paced coordination, the Lebanese diplomatic team in Washington prepared for Tuesday’s meeting with the Israeli ambassador, held under U.S. sponsorship.

The Lebanese delegation consisted of Ambassador Nada Moawad and Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul Wissam Boutros.

Preparation for the meeting was extensive and reflected the event's importance. It was based on political knowledge, negotiation skills, and coordination with political authorities in Lebanon.

A key strength of the Lebanese delegation was its readiness for all Israeli scenarios and its ability to respond effectively to any changes that might occur.

The Washington meeting marked the beginning of a diplomatic process. The Lebanese side presented its positions and principles clearly and directly, regardless of the outcome.

Lebanon insisted on a ceasefire, respect for territorial sovereignty, and an end to hostilities. It also emphasized the need to build a strong state capable of securing the country’s future militarily, politically, and economically, and asserting authority over all its territory.

The first round has now ended. The format of the second round will depend on decisions to be taken by Beirut and Tel Aviv, which are being closely followed by the presidential palace.

No official position has been issued from the presidential palace regarding the outcome of the Washington meeting, but sources said it is a continuation of the diplomatic track proposed by President Joseph Aoun before the start of the war.

The state, according to the sources, took its decision in the August 5 and August 7 cabinet sessions to restrict weapons to state authority, and later on March 2 declared Hezbollah’s military activity outside the law.

It also continued by strengthening security measures in Beirut.

The process stalled, according to the same sources, with Lebanon’s involvement in a support war alongside Iran that brought no benefit.

Diplomacy, the sources added, remains the best and most effective option.
