The tragic accident happened in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, when the legs of five-year-old Van Minh Dat were caught in the ropes of the kite.
He initially survived the shocking fall but then died in the hospital from injuries he sustained.
Footage taken on a mobile phone showed the moment when terrified spectators realized that the boy has been carried up with the kite.
The clip then shows him plummeting back down to the ground. It is said that the boy's parents sell beverages to kite fliers and members of the public in the Dong Dieu area in Hoc Mon District; an area where people often fly kites of various colors and sizes.
According to the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, Dat was standing next to a huge red kite that was about to be flown by the Saigon Kite Club in preparation for a kite festival.
While a group of people were trying to fly the kite, which has a wingspan of 59ft, Dat had managed to get under the kite's wing without anyone noticing.
Stunned onlookers hurried to pull the kite back down as it took off but failed to rescue the boy.
