REPORT: Syrian fighter jets hit central city of Homs

Activists said on Saturday that Syrian warplanes have hit rebel positions in Homs as part of the military campaign to push opposition fighters out of the country's third largest city.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime warplanes bombed two-rebel held areas in Homs on Saturday as clashes flared in the heart of the city. The army also fired mortar shells into several central districts of Homs, which have been an opposition stronghold since the uprising against Assad's rule began in March 2011.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the fighting.

On Friday, the embattled town of Rastan, near Homs, took another pounding as forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad increased their efforts to control a key area in central Syria as well as areas of the capital, Damascus.

The capital's Qaboun neighborhood, which has seen incessant action over the last few days, was again the site of explosions.

Activists said the area was being heavily shelled by tanks and rockets.

Footage posted online by activists showing the shelling appeared genuine and were consistent with other AP reporting of the events.

Controlling various parts of this trunk route is considered vital for the transportation of supplies, both military and non-military.

Meanwhile, in Aleppo on Friday, after prayers, thousands of people took to the streets in the city center to protest against the government.

"Move and raise your voice, we are not scared of death", they chanted, "We will step on them (the government)".

The United Nations has estimated that more than 93-thousand people have been killed in Syria's more than 2-year-old conflict, which started with largely peaceful protests against the rule of President Bashar Assad.

The uprising morphed into an armed rebellion in response to a brutal government crackdown on the protest movement.
