Iran's Revolutionary Guard commander slams Rouhani-Obama phone call

Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari praised on Monday the stances adopted by President Hassan Rouhani during his UN trip dubbing them “strong”, but slammed his telephone conversation with US president Barack Obama.

Jafari told Tasnim News Agency that Rouhani’s talks with his US counterpart should have followed practical changes in Washington’s attitude towards Iran.

“Given the fact that the Islamic Republic of Iran demonstrated its goodwill, especially by the stances and remarks made in the 68th session of the United Nations (General Assembly), now it is America’s turn to build trust with practical measures and prove its sincerity in practice,” the IRGC commander stated.

Last week, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made a five-day visit to New York to take part in the 68th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly. Rouhani and Obama spoke over the phone as the Iranian official was leaving New York on Friday.

 In New York, President Rouhani said his country was ready to engage in constructive talks with the West in order to deal with all issues concerning its peaceful nuclear program, rejecting claims that Tehran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.
