United States suspends non-lethal assistance into northern Syria

The Syrian government slammed on Wednesday the Gulf Cooperation Council for interfering in the country's crisis.

The statement came after the GCC called for the withdrawal of foreign forces participating in the fighting adding that President Bashar al-Assad should have no role in Syria's future.

Gulf states, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, support the uprising against Assad's government .

The GCC, after two days of talks in Kuwait, called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Syria and accused Assad's government of killing its people".

International positions:

The United States has suspended all non-lethal assistance into northern Syria after Islamic Front forces seized headquarters and warehouses belonging to the opposition's Supreme Military Council, an embassy spokesperson said.

"As a result of this situation, the United States has suspended all further deliveries of non-lethal assistance into northern Syria," the spokesperson said, adding humanitarian assistance was not impacted because it is distributed through international and non-governmental organizations.

For his part, Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron has warned against the idea that all of Syria's opposition is extremist and stressed the need to continue working with its moderate members.

Cameron told British lawmakers on Wednesday that Britain should be "fully engaged" in all efforts to end the civil war.

He said, "we must not allow this argument to develop that the only opposition in Syria is an extremist opposition," because that will only become reality if "we stop working with those who care about democracy and the future."
