Albanian sworn virgins are women who take a vow of chastity and wear male clothing in order to live as men in the patriarchal northern Albanian society to avoid the oppressive restrictions placed upon their gender.

The practice exists in other parts of the western Balkans, including Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia.Since the 15th century a number of Balkan tribes have followed an archaic code of law, prohibiting women from driving, voting, earning money, or wearing pants.

Because of this brave women worked on transforming themselves to men in a bid to preserve their honor.After changing their names, clothes, and hair styles, these women vowed celibacy for life in order to get opportunities originally reserved for men.
