Zookeepers kill baby giraffe, throw carcass to lion before the eyes of children
Schoolchildren gathered on Sunday to watch the body of a perfectly healthy baby giraffe being chopped up and fed to lions.         

More than 20,000 people signed an online petition to save two-year-old Marius, however, staff at Copenhagen Zoo shot the animal with a bolt pistol.        
Young children watched Marius' carcass being skinned and dissected before the meat was thrown to the lions.            

The Danish zoo said the drastic move was required in order to combat inbreeding, stressing that the display was educational.           

Nonetheless, animal rights campaigners denounced the killing of Marius, noting that "it exposed the cruel reality of welfare even in Europe’s top zoos".
