Fierce clashes reported near Syria's Observatory 45

The towns of Nabee al-Mur, Salma and Ghamam, located in Reef Latakia, are being constantly shelled by the Syrian army, causing several casualties, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday.

"Fierce clashes are taking place between army troops and opposition gunmen in the vicinity of the Observatory 45 region as well as the al-Nabain area," the Observatory added.

Also on Thursday, Syria's state media and an activist group said several mortar shells struck the capital of Damascus and its suburbs, killing at least six people.

State TV said the deadliest among Thursday's attacks occurred in the suburb of Harasta, where six children were killed and eight were wounded.

State news agency SANA said five people were wounded when a mortar shell struck the upscale central neighborhood of Maliki.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said shells also struck central Damascus, including the Ummayad Square, set close to the TV and radio stations as well as the army command.It said there were no casualties in the square.

Also, activists noted that there are heavy clashes underway and air raids in the Damascus suburb of Mleiha.
