Child bride forced into marriage kills groom and his friends in Nigeria
A child bride who was forced into marriage in Nigeria killed her husband and 3 of his friends by preparing a meal with rat poison, police reported.

14-year-old Wasila Umaru was married last week to Umaru Sani, 35, assistant superintendent Musa Magaji Majia said.

When Umaru invited his friends to celebrate in northern Ungwar Yansoro town, near the city of Kano, the teenager added the deadly chemical to a rice dish.

The husband died the same day along with friends Nasiru Mohammed and Alhassan Alhassan. A female victim, Indo Ibrahim, also died while being hospitalized.

The teenager admitted that she bought the poison at a local market and slipped it into the meal.

"Wasila confessed to committing the crime and said she did it after she was compelled to marry a man she did not love," Majia said.

Child marriage is common in Nigeria with fifty percent of girls living in rural areas are being married before they turn 18, according to the UN children's agency.
