Iran denies recruiting Afghan refugees to fight in Syria
Iran denied on Wednesday a report issued by the US Wall Street Journal stating that it is recruiting Afghan refugees to fight in Syria alongside the Syrian army in their war against rebels.

"The claim of the US paper is completely unfounded and is aimed at damaging Iran's reputation in Afghanistan," foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said in a statement issued by Iranian media.

The journal cited Afghans and Western official as saying that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were offering Iranian residency and $500 monthly stipends to thousands of Afghan refugees to fight Syrian rebels.

According to the newspaper, details of the alleged recruitment of Afghans were posted last week on a blog aimed at Afghan refugees in Iran, while an Afghan cleric confirmed the information.

Iran, a key ally of Syria's President Bashar Assad in his fight against rebels, admits that it provides Damascus with military and financial support.
