EU renews economic sanctions against Syria for another year
The European Union said on Thursday it was renewing economic sanctions against Syria, which include an oil embargo and asset freezes against allies of Syrian President Bashar Assad, for another year.

The measures affect 179 who are reportedly linked to the violent repression in Syria.

The EU added that the measures will extend to June, 1, 2015.

Two people and one entity have been removed from the list of those included in the sanctions, which first saw light in May 2013.

The renewal of EU sanctions comes days before a presidential election is due in Syria and is expected to give Assad another term in office.

The civil war raging since March 2011 has killed more than 160,000 people and forced nearly half the population to flee their homes.
