Pope prays for reconciliation in Ukraine and Central African Republic

Pope Francis renewed his appeal for peace in the Ukraine and the Central African Republic during his address to pilgrims gathered at St. Peter's Square on Sunday.

"With a grieving heart, I pray for the victims of the tensions that still continue in some regions of Ukraine, as well as in the Central African Republic. I renew my heartfelt appeal to all parties involved, that they will overcome all misunderstandings and with patience they will seek dialogue and reconciliation," the Pope said from the window of the papal apartment.

Ukraine has been split apart for over two months caused partly by the ouster of a Moscow-friendly president and the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russian troops.

Central African Republic has been gripped by ethnic and religious violence since northern Seleka rebels, who are mostly Muslim, seized power in the mainly Christian nation in 2013.

Seleka left power in January under international pressure and since then anti-balaka Christian militias have preyed on Muslims.

hose attacks have largely driven Muslims from Bangui and the west, effectively partitioning the country, whose east is controlled mainly by Seleka.

Tensions have soared in the mostly Christian capital after Muslim gunmen attacked a church in its Fatima neighborhood on Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and abducting 27 others, according to U.N. officials.

The Pope has kept up his busy schedule since his return from the Middle East.

Later on Sunday, the Pope will travel to Rome's Olympic Stadium for the first time.

But rather than watch a football match, he will be celebrating the faith with representatives of more than fifty countries in a convention of prayer, music and dance.
