Police use stun grenades at metro strike in Sao Paulo
Military Police used stun grenades to control protesters at a strike on the metro in Sao Paulo this Friday morning.

Workers have been on strike since Thursday, calling initially for a salary rise of 16.5.

Negotiations went ahead yesterday but without resolution, resulting in a second day of strikes disrupting the city.

The union agreed to lower the demand to 12.2 percent, but the authorities maintain that they will not rise above 8.7 percent.

Of 63 stations throughout the city, only 32 were opened this Friday.

The confusion broke out as protesters linked to the unions attempted to prevent workers from opening the station Ana Rosa, through which two separate lines operate.

Stun grenades were used along with batons to control the crowds.

Further to the strikes, heavy rain in Sao Paulo has brought roads to a virtual stand-still, causing serious disruptions for workers throughout the city.
