Over 1,000 migrants rescued from Italy's sea in last 48 hours
Coast guard officials said on Thursday over one thousand migrants have been rescued off the coast of Italy in the last 48 hours.
 
In the depth of the night, 251 migrants were transferred from their precarious boat at sea onto a coast guard vessel.
 
Some 63,000 migrants have reached Italy from North Africa so far this year, many fleeing war and forced conscription as well as poverty and a lack of opportunity.
 
Italy has called on its European Union partners to do more to help manage the near daily arrivals, a phenomenon that has boosted voter support for the anti-immigration Northern League party in a country struggling to emerge from recession.
