Search and rescue efforts continue in Japan after massive landslides

Rescue crews in the Japanese city of Hiroshima continued to search for survivors on Saturday, four days after large landslides killed dozens of people in the suburbs.

The city's disaster prevention office said six bodies were found on Saturday, raising the death toll to 46, while 41 people remain missing.

A critical juncture for finding survivors had passed early on Saturday morning - authorities noted that the chances of finding survivors drop after about 72 hours.

About 3,000 firefighters, rescue workers and police have been scouring the area in a race against time to find those missing.

Relatives were seen near their homes, anxiously waiting to see whether their loved ones might be found.

One man said he made the trek to the area around his house everyday, looking for his missing wife.

For those who survived, it remains difficult for families and neighbors to attend funerals as roads remain blocked.

Still, volunteers from neighboring towns flocked to the disaster area to offer support and help.

Torrents of mud, rocks and timber swept through at least five valleys in Hiroshima's suburbs early on Wednesday morning.

Over 1,700 people have been placed in temporary shelters, with evacuation orders still in effect over large areas of the disaster-hit towns due to forecasts of more heavy rains to come over the weekend.
