Opening of Chirac’s trial in absentia
The trial of former French President Jacques Chirac on charges of misusing public funds starts on Monday in his absence for being “mentally unfit to face trial”, according to medical reports.

His lawyers submitted earlier a neurological report saying that Chirac was in "a vulnerable condition that will not allow him to answer questions about his past".

Chirac is being tried with 9 others over charges that date back to his time as mayor of Paris in the early 1990s.

Chirac is suspected of having allegedly added the names of allies from his political party, the RPR, to the Paris city hall payroll, paying them salaries for jobs that never existed.
