Turkey detains 40 Israeli tourists amid tensions

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said that around 40 Israeli tourists were arrested and questioned upon their arrival to Istanbul International Airport. The Ministry spokesperson Elana Stein told AFP- France Press- that the Israelis, mostly businessmen, were not told why they were taken to a side room in the airport, where their passports were taken from them.

The passengers, who arrived on a Turkish Airlines flight, were allowed through and had their passports returned only after some 90 minutes, she said The incident comes after the tensions between the two countries since Israel refused to apologize for the Freedom Flotilla attack.

The Gaza flotilla raid, also known as the flotilla incident of 31 May 2010, was a military operation by Israel against six ships of the "Gaza Freedom Flotilla" on 31 May 2010 in international waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The flotilla, organized by the Free Gaza Movement and the Turkish Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (İHH), was carrying humanitarian aid and construction materials, with the intention of breaking the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip. Nine activists were killed in the raid most of them were Turkish volunteers from the İHH.
