Friday of International Protection protests across Syria

Syria braced for another Friday of demonstrations to urge for international protection a day after security forces stormed a village in the northwest village and killed three military defectors. Protesters took to the streets across Syria after Friday prayers, demanding international protection to stop civilian killings and defying military assaults to end a six month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, residents and activists said.

Activists said initial reports indicated that large crowds marched in the city of Homs, where the army and militiamen loyal to Assad raided numerous districts this week, and in Deir al-Zor, which was stormed by tanks last month. Protests were also starting in suburbs of the capital city of Damascus, the Kurdish northeast, and the northwestern province of Idlib near Turkey and in southern Syria.

"People want international protection," read a large banner carrier by protesters who congregated at a square in the southern town of Jiza, according to video footage broadcast by activists.

A delegation from the Syrian opposition headed by the President of the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria, Ammar Qurabi visited Moscow on Friday to meet with Foreign Affairs official in the Supreme Council of the Russian parliament Mikhail Margelov.

After the meeting Qurabi said that the Syrian opposition expects more support from Russia, calling on Moscow to play a more active and positive role in the settlement of the political situation in Syria.
