Canada condemns attack on Israeli embassy in Egypt

Canada on Saturday condemned the attack on Israel's embassy in Egypt, where protesters stormed the facility in the first such attack in more than three decades of bilateral peace.

"Our government strongly condemns the attack on the embassy of Israel in Egypt," a statement by Prime Minister Stephen Harper said.

"We call upon the government of Egypt to abide by its responsibility under the Vienna Convention and take all measures necessary to protect diplomatic personnel and property," he stressed.

Harper said Canada expects Egypt to honor "its commitment to uphold its international agreements, including its peace treaty with Israel. "As Egypt transforms itself into a representative democracy, it is critical for both countries to work hard on reducing tensions between their peoples so that regional stability may be attained," Harper added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the mob attack a "serious incident," but reiterated that his country is "committed to preserving peace with Egypt, which is in the interest of Egypt and Israel." Three people were killed in the incident and more than 1,000 injured, including 300 police, authorities said.
