Talibani: Hashemi's death sentence complicates national reconciliation

Iraqi President Jalal Talibani said on Monday that the death sentence against Vice President Tarek Al Hashemi might complicate the efforts for national reconciliation, stressing that he respects the judiciary decisions.

Talibani added that he tried to convene a national congress to settle the differences between the different political parties and confessions in Iraq.

The charges against al-Hashemi, one of the country's highest-ranking Sunni officials, have fuelled simmering Sunni and Kurdish resentments against the Shiite prime minister, who critics claim is monopolizing power, and has led to a near-paralysis of Iraq's government.

Iraq's Shiite-led government has accused al-Hashemi of playing a role in 150 bombings, assassinations and other attacks from 2005 to 2011 - most of which were allegedly carried out by his bodyguards and other employees.
