US: Economic reforms in Jordan are “a necessary pain”

US State Department's spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Friday that economic reforms in Jordan, which have pushed up fuel prices and triggered protests, are "a necessary pain".

The US official added that Secretary of State Hilary Clinton contacted Jordan’s King Abdullah II and praised the efforts the Jordanian cabinet is exerting to face the economic challenges.

"In the case of Jordan, you have a government that is wrestling with reform, trying to meet obligations for reform both to their own people and to the IMF,” Nuland stated.

Calls for the ouster of Jordan's King Abdullah II grew Friday, as thousands of protesters packed the streets of the capital and demonstrations resumed elsewhere.

Larger groups have demonstrated in Amman since the unrest sparked by fuel price hikes started three days ago, but Friday's march constituted the biggest single bloc yet to call for the end of the US-backed monarch's regime.
