Egyptian lawyer sentenced to jail and lashes by Saudi court

A Saudi court in Jeddah sentenced an Egyptian human rights lawyer Ahmed al-Gizawi to five years in jail and 300 lashes.

Gizawi was accused of drug trafficking. He was arrested back in April carrying drugs, which his family claim were anti-anxiety medication.

Following his arrest, Egyptians protested and the Saudis recalled their ambassador.

This case sparked a diplomatic row between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
