Germany company to supply tanks, guns to Qatar

A German company says it has signed a deal with Qatar to supply the Gulf emirate with 62 new tanks and 24 self-propelled howitzers.

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann said Thursday that the contract to deliver the Leopard 2 main battle tanks and PzH 2000 howitzers to Qatar is worth 1.89 billion euros ($2.5 billion).

The company says the equipment will replace outdated artillery and tanks of French and South African origin. It says some of the gas-rich state's current military equipment is more than 40 years o ld.
