Over 500 French troops withdraw from Mali

Over 500 French soldiers have left Mali since announcing their withdrawal.

France began pulling out troops on April 9th from Mali where the French were fighting Islamist militants.

France hopes to have only 1,000 soldiers in Mali by the end of the year, handing over duties to the African force which currently numbers around 6,300 soldiers.

France stepped in after stating that al-Qaeda linked insurgents who had taken over northern Mali threatened to march on Bamako, the capital of the country.
