REPORT: Nasrallah says Hezbollah will bring victory in Syrian conflict

Activists say forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad have unleashed their heaviest artillery barrage in a week to dislodge rebels from a strategic western town.

Pro-Assad troops, including fighters from the Lebanon’s Hezbollah, launched an offensive against the rebel-held town of al-Qussair a week ago. They have gained ground, but rebels continue to hold some positions.

Local activist Hadi Abdullah and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the artillery barrage began early Saturday. The regime wants to recapture the al-Qussair town to open a land corridor between its strongholds in the capital Damascus and on the Mediterranean coast.

Positions:

The leader of Lebanese movement Hezbollah said his group would stay in the Syrian war "to the end of the road" and bring victory to its ally President Bashar al-Assad.

Hassan Nasrallah, head of the group, said in a televised speech on Saturday Syria and Lebanon were under threat from radical Sunni Islamists.

"We will continue to the end of the road, we accept this responsibility and will accept all sacrifices and expected consequences of this position," he said, speaking from an undisclosed location. "We will be the ones who bring it victory, God willing," he added.
