STL Pre-Trial Judge to hold Status Conference on Wednesday

The Pre-Trial Judge of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon Daniel Fransen declared on Monday that he will be holding a status conference hearing on Wednesday 3 July. In conformity with the Rules of Procedures and Evidence of the STL, the Pre-Trial Judge convenes such hearings to review the status of the case through an exchange between the parties in order to ensure expeditious preparation for trial.

The Status Conference, which will begin at 2:30 PM (Central European Time), will be public; however, the Judge might decide to go into closed session during the course of the hearing if confidential matters need to be discussed.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set up by the United Nations at the Lebanese government's request to try the alleged perpetrators of the 2005 bombing in which former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others were killed.

The suspects - Mustafa Amine Badreddine, a senior Hezbollah figure and brother-in-law of slain Hezbollah commander Imad Moughniyeh, Salim Jamil Ayyash, Hussein Hassan Oneissi and Assad Hassan Sabra - remain at large.
