Lebanese-Canadian man questioned in Cyprus after ammonium nitrate found in home

Police in Cyprus were questioning a man on Wednesday after a large quantity of ammonium nitrate, a potential explosive, was found at his home, police sources said. Almost two tons of the substance was found at an apartment in the coastal town of Larnaca.

The individual, who is a 26-year-old of Lebanese origin but thought to hold a passport of a western country, arrived on the Mediterranean island a week ago.

"Ammmonium nitrate is considered an explosive substance," a police source who requested anonymity told Reuters. The substance was found in packages, the source said. No further details were immediately available.

State radio reported the individual was in custody and would probably be taken before a magistrate on Thursday, when authorities would seek a remand order.
