Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri Monday expressed regret over the abstention of Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil from voting in favor of a statement issued by the Arab League foreign ministers during the emergency meeting that was held in Cairo on Sunday to condemn the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran.
“Bassil’s stance does not represent the majority of the Lebanese people. However, it appeases Iran and offends Lebanon’s history,” Hariri added.
In a statement, the former PM stated that “rejecting the Arab League statement seemingly since it condemned Hezbollah over alleged meddling in Bahrain does not justify Lebanon’s rejection to vote for a decision taken by the Arab league, which consists in denouncing Iran’s interference in the Arabs’ internal affairs."
Bahrain declared on Wednesday that it had dismantled a “terror” cell linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard and Lebanon's Hezbollah.
The cell was reportedly planning to carry out a "series of dangerous bombings" in the kingdom, a Bahraini interior ministry statement said.
Demonstrators in Tehran stormed the Saudi embassy and a Saudi consulate after Saudi Arabia executed a well-known Shiite cleric and opposition leader Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr earlier this month.
