Moukheiber to LBCI: Only few inmates will benefit from prison sentence draft

MP Ghassan Moukheiber told Nharkom Said TV show that the draft law reducing the prison sentence year to 9 months is part of comprehensive reforms aimed at modernizing and developing the Lebanese judicial system and solving the prisons’ issues. Moukheiber stressed on Thursday that this step should encourage inmates to improve their behavior and refrain from committing crimes.

“The draft complements a number of similar legislations taken in western and Arab countries”, Moukheiber added, “This law was not meant to encourage impunity since it will not be applied to the most dangerous criminals.”

Moukheiber stressed that no one should expect that this decision will mitigate the state of overcrowded Lebanese prisons since only few inmates will benefit from the law.
