Bassil receives letter from UN’s Ban
Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil received on Friday a letter from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, whereby he stressed that peace in Syria will allow the United Nations to create circumstances that will pave the way for the safe, dignified and voluntary return of the refugees.

Ban pointed out that the situation of the refugees requires an international protection since their country of origin does not offer such security. Thus, their return to their country is intertwined with a "drastic change in the conditions in Syria."

"Only then would the UN exert its best endeavors to support their return," he said.

The secretary went on to say that he supports Bassil's stance concerning the refugees' contribution to the peace process and the rebuilding of their country, which must happen following the end of the conflict.

He added that the United Nations will put forth all efforts to reach a solution in terms of the Syrian conflict and help easing the burden that some countries are carrying in this regard, including Lebanon.

This as Ban expressed the UN's appreciation for the generosity of Lebanon in hosting over a million registered Syrians. He vowed to continue to find ways to financially support the country.
