STL acquits Al-Jadeed TV, journalist Karma al-Khayat on all counts

Special Tribunal for Lebanon acquitted Tuesday Al-Jadeed TV and the channel’s news director Karma al-Khayat of all the charges that were attributed to them.

The court also dismissed the 10,000 euro fine ($11,000) issued against the Lebanese journalist al-Khayat.

On September 28, 2015, a judge in The Hague fined Karma al-Khayat 10,000 euros ($11,000) for contempt of court in the case against the alleged killers of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic al-Hariri.

Ten days earlier, al-Khayat was convicted of failing to obey a court order to remove from the internet video interviews that risked exposing witnesses in the case against the five suspects in the 2005 bomb blast that killed Hariri and 21 others.

She was acquitted of the more serious charge of exposing the witnesses, but prosecutors had nonetheless asked for a one-year jail term for the journalist, who has described her conviction as an attack on the freedom of the press.

Five suspects, all linked to Hezbollah, which is part of the current government, have since been indicted for the killing. They remain at large and are being tried in absentia.

Supporters of Hezbollah accuse the tribunal of serving US and Israeli interests.

The court was set up with United Nations support after Lebanese politicians said their judicial system could not cope with the investigation.

Its annual funding comes jointly from Lebanon and Western and Gulf Arab countries.
