REPORT: H5 virus detected in al-Nabi Sheet, precautionary measures implemented

Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb stressed Thursday that the H5 virus has been detected in one of the poultry farms in al-Nabi Sheet in Baalbek, noting that the ministry started taking the necessary measures.

Chehayeb reassured the Lebanese people that the bird flu has been confined to al-Nabi Sheet village only.

“There is no need to worry,” he added.

For his part, the Director General of Health at the Health Ministry, Walid Ammar, clarified that the bird flu is a viral infection spread from birds to humans, but not from humans to humans.

He added that the medicine is available, thus there is no need to worry.

Following the outbreak of the virus across the town and its spread into ten farms, the region was declared as infected, while a field survey was also carried out on all birds in town as a continuation to the relevant procedure.

In addition, a deep pit was dug in the town where thousands of chickens and chicks from the ten infected farms were buried, as well as poultry raised by residents in their own backyards.

An embargo for an indefinite period of time was imposed banning the transfer of any poultry from the town to another, in order to prevent the virus from spreading.

The field survey will also be carried out across the neighboring villages.
