Siniora and Moussawi make amends in round 4 of parliamentary debates
Round four of the general discussions session resumed a few moments ago in Parliament. During Wednesday’s morning round, verbal bouts and electoral bids were tossed among MPs.

In the first speech delivered, MP Hassan Fadlallah reiterated the idea that the weapons of the resistance protect all Lebanese, adding that “the Israeli enemy is no longer preparing its rockets and knows that [attacking] Lebanon is no walk in the park.”

Speaking on spies, Fadlallah said that Hezbollah is for applying the capital punishment in this case, wondering: “After the year 2000 who prevented that? What consecutive government did so and why wasn’t this [punishment] applied?”

“You have no right to discuss an issue that you left unsettled”, Fadlallah added.

Fadlallah’s remarks prompted MP Fouad Siniora to intervene and interrupt him by saying: “Are you convinced by what you’re saying? This is really puzzling.”

When speaking on “weapons resisting Israel” and “weapons against Syria”, MP Mohammad Fatfat intervened, saying that he is accusing others of treason.

MP Sami Gemayel also interrupted him saying: “We are here to discuss the cabinet and we haven’t mentioned Hezbollah’s weapons yet unless we wished to discuss them. We can change [the direction] of our speeches and we are ready to do so”.

MP Elie Marouni, for his part, attacked the cabinet that he considered was born from a Syrian decision, adding that security apparatuses cannot cover all Lebanese territories and the government is not lifting one finger to fix the situation.

Marouni criticized the performance of Energy Minister Gebran Bassil, accusing him of being indifferent towards Lebanon’s electricity problems. Marouni said: “Bassil promises the Lebanese that there will be more to come if the government does not sign [the papers] he wants”.

He wondered: “Why so spiteful?”

For his part, MP Estephan Douaihy said that Lebanon’s fate depends on everyone’s sense of responsibility. He underscored the need for a national unified rhetoric that promotes domestic unity and shields Lebanon from regional turmoil.

In his speech, MP Samir Jeser said that Lebanon needs a rescue cabinet. He asked PM Najib Mikati a series of questions including the following: “Dear PM did you receive the latest news about contracting teachers working in public, vocational and higher education? Do you know that the rules for working full-time violate all principles and a teacher who has been working for four years has the lead on another whose been teaching for 18 years and all in the name of balance?”

He addressed MP Michel Aoun with a series of questions: “The day Brig. Gen. Fayez Karam was accused, shouldn’t you have said that the judicial system is our refuge if he is found guilty then we will absolve ourselves and if he is found to be innocent then we will hold those who accused him responsible?”

MP Imad Hout said that he is against the treason campaign, calling for engaging in a real dialogue to establish a technocrat cabinet, since people have lost faith in the current government.

This round witnessed a rare meeting between MP Fouad Siniora and Hezbollah MP Nawaf Moussawi in a parliamentary hall. Moreover, MPs Emil Rahme and Akram Chehayib met to reconcile their differences.
