Aleppo orphanage is lifeline for area's desperate children
In the midst of a five-year civil war that has left thousands of children without parents, this orphanage on the outskirts of Aleppo provides a much-needed lifeline.
 
With no-one left to look after them, many Syrian orphans become vulnerable to being recruited as soldiers. 
 
According to UNICEF, children, some as young as seven, are offered monthly 'salaries' and gifts to encourage them to join the war.
 
The Islamic Orphanage in Azaz, to the north of Aleppo, collects the children from surrounding villages and camps each day and provides them with schooling, food and a semblance of normality.
 
"Our aim is to take care of the orphans from the age of primary school to the age of secondary school. We do the following: we take care of their educational needs and support them with the help of civil society organisations. Because of the conditions in our country, there is extra pressure as we receive children from all over the country, due to displacement and due to people fleeing from city to city and village to village. Thank God we are managing,​" said teacher Mohammed Jafar. 
 
The orphanage, which was set up in 1945 by a charitable organisation, relies on donations to keep going. 
 
It uses some of its funds to support families who have taken in orphaned relatives.  
 
"The orphanage also takes care of the orphans' families by providing them with food and essential items," said the orphanage's supervisor, Mohammed al-Daher.   
 
Located in a rebel-held area of divided Aleppo, the Islamic Orphanage cares for over 400 boys a day, while providing money to help orphaned girls living with relatives. 
 
It's a rare facility in a country where thousands are killed each day - creating ever more orphaned children.
