REPORT: Kataeb leader MP Gemayel says Bourj Hammoud landfill will destroy people’s health

Kataeb party leader MP Sami Gemayel said on Thursday that the Bourj Hammoud landfill “will destroy people’s health.”

“Sukleen will landfill %96 of the trash collected in Bourj Hammoud landfill without sorting itI,” Gemayel said during a press conference.

He also noted that alternatives for Bourj Hammoud landfill can be easily found and lie in the plan submitted by Minister of Agriculture Akram Chehayeb that focuses on the decentralization of the waste.

He concluded by stressing that permanent health and environmental decentralized solutions can be implemented with the funds allocated for the Bourj Hammoud landfill.

Later on, Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb criticized Gemayel's statements, saying his ministers had participated in a Cabinet session that approved the trash plan.

"If his statements benefit him in securing more votes during the upcoming parliamentary elections in the region of Metn, then we support him. However, if they are actually related to the environment, we will discuss the environmental issues and open all files," the minister said.
