Environment Minister Tareq Khatib inspected on Thursday the Costa Brava landfill whereby he said that there are no seagulls over the dump, but above the Al-Ghadir River.

"However, this issue needs to be treated," he added.

"We have been informed about the judicial decision on our way to the landfill and we will abide by this decision and will work on solving this issue and to guarantee safe flights," the minister noted.

He also declared that he assigned a team of employees to supervise the Costa Brava landfill's work.

This as Mount Lebanon Urgent Matters Judge Hassan Hamdan issued earlier a decision stating the temporary closure of the dump, until a solution for the birds threatening flights at the Rafic Hariri Airport is found.

The judge has ordered the temporary closure of the rubbish dump near Beirut airport after warnings that birds attracted by the garbage were threatening aircraft safety, a lawyer said.

Seagulls attracted to the garbage in the Costa Brava landfill became a danger to planes at the nearby airport.

The safety of flights has been raised after several instances occurred of birds hitting planes during takeoff.
