The cabinet decided on Thursday to return to the ministerial committee that was formed and tasked to discuss the electoral law, given that Prime Minister Saad Hariri will call on it to resume its meetings.
At the beginning of the cabinet session that convened at Baabda presidential palace under the chairmanship of President Michel Aoun to discuss an agenda of 105 items, Aoun stressed that the Lebanese are waiting a new electoral law that provides fair representation within all sects.
During the meeting, Aoun said that voting over the electoral law could become a necessity in case of failure to reach an agreement, emphasizing the need to remain within the boundaries of the constitution.
For his part, Prime Minister Saad Hariri pointed out that “Lebanon stands before an opportunity to agree over political matters that concern the Lebanese people” adding that there is openness from all parties in discussing the proposed issues.
Prior to the session, Social Affairs Minister Pierre Bou Assi said that in case the ministers failed to agree over an electoral proposal, they will resort to vote, adding that the issue of quarries and crushers closure will also be tackled during the session.
In turn, Industry Minister Hussein Hajj Hassan stressed the need to reach a new electoral law in order to avoid the three bad choices that are “the 1960s law, the term extension and the parliamentary vacuum.”
He added that his bloc supports the law based on proportional representation, but they remain open for other suggestions.
