Bassil to Italian counterpart: Lebanon has reached the point of collapse

Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil met on Thursday with his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano.

Following the meeting, Bassil asserted that Lebanon has reached the point of collapse in terms of the country’s ability to receive the huge influx of Syrian refugees.

He also added that the political solution for the Syrian crisis is the basis, adding that refugees must return to their homelands.

On another note, Bassil said that field victories against the Islamic State must be accompanied by the elimination of whoever funds the organization.

For his part, Minister Alfano stressed that Italy is supporting Lebanon “in this difficult time to contribute to its stability and the entire region’s stability.”

He also praised Lebanon’s efforts in receiving the refugees.

“I don’t think that any country in the whole world can host such a huge number of refugees like Lebanon,” he concluded by saying.

Earlier in the day, President Michel Aoun held talks with Alfano at the Baabda Presidential Palace.

Refugees who fled the six-year-long crisis in neighboring Syria form a quarter of Lebanon's population, and most of them live in poverty in camps across the country.

The Syria war has weakened Lebanon's economy, fomented tensions among Lebanese allied to the rival sides, and triggered a number of jihadist attacks.
