REPORT: Bassil says only dialogue is solution for Gulf crisis

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil met on Friday with UAE Ambassador Hamad Saeed Al- Shamsi, Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon Nazih Al-Najariand Saudi Embassy Acting Chargé d'Affaires Sultan Al-Sibai.

Talks reportedly featured high over the Gulf crisis withQatar whereby he said that only dialogue and diplomacy is the solution for the crisis.

“Lebanon doesn’t interfere in the affairs of ally states, and calls for dialogue and diplomacy,” he added.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Egypt and other Arab countries cut relations with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting Islamist militants and their arch-opponent Iran – accusations that Qatar calls inaccurate.

Earlier, Bassil met with his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto whereby he declared Lebanon’s need to urgent aid to deal with the refugees’ influx to the country.

“The International community has come to an extent where it can no longer satisfy all that is required for the Syrian refugees,” Bassil said in a joint press conference following the meeting.

“The Syrian refugee crisis and terrorism are Lebanon’s two biggest obstacles,” he added.

More than 1 million Syrian refugees are now registered with UNHCR in Lebanon, but the Lebanese government has estimated that the number is closer to 1.5 million.
