Russia: Syria uprising could spread to Lebanon
Russia's foreign minister says that the conflict in Syria could spread to neighboring Lebanon.

Speaking in a televised news conference on Wednesday, Sergei Lavrov said that there is "a tangible threat" of the Syrian uprising spilling over to Lebanon which "could end very badly. He warned about "an artificial escalation" of tensions between two main branches of Islam, Shiites and Sunnis.

Russia has been Syria's most powerful ally over the course of the uprising. Russia, along with China, has used its veto power to shield Damascus from U.N. sanctions.

On another note, Lavrov said Iran appears ready for serious discussion of concrete steps to resolve the international standoff over its nuclear program.

He  also said that potential new sanctions approved by the U.S. Senate would undermine efforts to reach agreement with Iran.

He said that in expert-level meetings preparing for the talks, "we got the clear impression ... that the Iranian side is ready to seek agreement on concrete actions" under a "step-by-step" process in which it would take measures to address concerns it could be seeking nuclear weapons in return for the gradual removal of sanctions.
