REPORT: All-female radio station aims to empower Gazan women

With an all-woman staff, Hawa radio is the first radio station in Gaza solely dedicated to women's issues.

Broadcast from the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza City, the station was launched on August 8.

Its 12 women employees are completely in charge of all of the station's programs.

Those involved in station say they want to advocate women's rights, and discuss issues from a feminist point of view.

“The programs that we present focus on the Palestinian woman because we are living in a community, that is, so to speak, a masculine community, which thinks a woman's role is to grow up, get married, raise a family and take care of the children,” said Bara Ali, one of station's hosts.

Another goal of the station is to provide employment and training opportunities to Palestinian women graduates studying media courses.

The station's daily talk shows, one broadcast in the morning and another in the evening, sees female hosts from varied backgrounds airing their views.
