Yemen: 3 militants and 3 soldiers killed in south

Yemeni military officials say fighting that broke out after a militant ambush of an army supply convoy has killed three al-Qaida-linked fighters and three soldiers in the country's south.

The officials said the militants staged the ambush early Tuesday northeast of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province.

Yemen's army is pushing an offensive to uproot al-Qaida-linked militants from their strongholds in the south. It claims it has retaken most of Zinjibar, which fell last year to militants taking advantage of political turmoil to extend their control over much of the south.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.
