Mufti Derian: We have to examine reasons behind Hariri’s resignation

Grand Mufti Abdel Latif Derian dubbed on Thursday the relationship between Lebanon and Saudi Arabi as “solid” that stretches back to Lebanon’s independence.

“We should preserve, safeguard and enhance this relation,” Sheikh Derian said in front of his visitors.

He also stressed that Lebanon needs the support of all his “Arab brothers,” mainly Saudi Arabia in order to put an end for the crisis that emerged following the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

“We should examine the content of this resignation,” Mufti Derian added.

He also called the Lebanese leaders to stay calm, to restore to their wisdom and to seriously examine the reasons behind the resignation away from statements that “do not serve Lebanon’s unity, security and stability.”

Mufti Derian tackled the latest developments in the country in a phone call with Speaker Nabih Berri and voiced appreciation for his “wisdom and for his national stances.”

Saad Hariri traveled to Riyadh on November 3 before suddenly resigning a day later, and he has remained in the Saudi capital since then.

Hariri cited Hezbollah's polices and assassination plots as reasons behind his resignation.

Lebanese officials and officials believe however that he was forced to quit and that he is being held hostage in KSA.

Hariri and Saudi Arabia have both denied he is being held in Riyadh or was forced to resign.
