REPORT: President Aoun says hopes Israel does not escalate

President Michel Aoun said on Thursday that the latest incidents that took place in the country were addressed in order to preserve the national unity according to law and the Lebanese Constitution.

Aoun’s comments were made during a Cabinet session held under his chairmanship at the Baabda Presidential Palace.

He called on the ministers to speed up discussion over the state’s Budget and to complete the necessary preparations for the three conferences that are scheduled to convene to support Lebanon.

On another note, Aoun said that talks were underway "to prevent Israeli greed" amid bilateral disputes over a border wall and an offshore energy block in disputed waters.

"Communications are ongoing through the United Nations and friendly states to handle this issue... hoping that Israel does not escalate," Aoun added.

"We will confront any attack" on Lebanon's territory or waters, he said.

For his part, Prime Minister Saad Hariri said that President Aoun and Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil are following up on the Israeli threats and aggression to reach results.

He also noted that the three conferences will be followed by draft laws to be studied and approved by the Parliament.

During the session, the Cabinet formed a committee headed by Prime Minister Saad Hariri to study a plan to expand Beirut International Airport.

The Cabinet also approved the computerizing of Lebanon's personal status department.
