UNHCR says aware of refugees returning to Syria, yet not involved in organizing such return

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commented Wednesday on the impending return of some 500 Syrian refugees from southern Shebaa to Beit Jinn in Syria, saying it "negotiated the return with those refugees and the concerned authorities to assess their intentions and the circumstances in which such repatriation will take place."

In a statement, the UNHCR said that it "does not participate in organizing this return or other return movements at this stage, given the humanitarian and security conditions prevailing over Syria."

However, the UNHCR respects all individual decisions for refugees to return to their country of origin, especially when taken without undue pressure," the statement read.”
