President Michel Aoun hoped that the Russian initiative concerning the return of Syrian refugees will receive the support of the UN in order to end their suffering.
During the meeting with the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN, Pernille Dahler Kardel, President Aoun said that they welcomed the Russian initiative because it ensures the return of 890 thousand displaced Syrians from Lebanon to Syria, adding that they will form a committee in order to coordinate with the Russians the technical details related to the return process.
President Aoun also demanded from Kardel to inform the UN Secretary General, António Guterres of Lebanon’s request to renew the term of the UNIFIL without any amendments.
For her part, Kardel affirmed that the UN is committed to the Lebanese partnership to preserve security and stability and to disassociate it from all the regional developments, stressing that the UN Security Council praised the role of the Lebanese army and the necessity of boosting its capabilities in order to impose its authority across Lebanon territories.
