Second day of stoning ritual begins in Mina as part of Haj pilgrimage

Muslim pilgrims threw stones at a giant wall in Mina on Wednesday (August 22) in a symbolic stoning of the devil ritual.

Just after sunrise, on the second of the three-day ritual, thousands of pilgrims walked over the bridge towards the three large walls.

More than 2.37 million pilgrims made the journey to Mina for haj, a religious duty once in a lifetime for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford the journey.

It is the riskiest stage of the annual pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and the country's monarchy has installed more than 100,000 security personnel to maintain order. In 2015, hundreds of pilgrims died in a crush.
